After you activate your account, you will be presented with a 60 question diagnostic test designed to measure your aptitude across all of the skills tested on his exam. After you complete completing the diagnostic, PrepScholar creates a customized study plan and presents you with a set of lessons each week designed to help you improve in all areas of the test, focusing first on gaps in your knowledge and skills where you can gain the most points.

The initial diagnostic test contains 60 questions, and takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. For the best customized program, you should budget enough time to complete the diagnostic in a single sitting.

Generally, most schools nowadays accept both equally, so you don't have an admission advantage just from taking either test. Also, most students perform very comparably on both tests, even though the SAT and ACT have different formats.

In an ideal case, we usually recommend that most students put in at least 40 hours of study time as a baseline, including practice tests. This time can be split up in a way that’s most convenient. If you have two months to study, then 5 hours per week is a good target. If you have less time, then you should try to study more each week. If you have more time, you are welcome to study less each week. Students are never hindered from working more than 5 hours a week, nor are they penalized for working less.

However, please do note that individual study times vary, so some students can complete the program way below 40 hours, while others won’t be able to finish it by 40 hours. Completion is based on finishing lessons and not any explicit time metric.

Even if you aren’t able to put in 40 hours, you should still see great results. We’ve had students who studied just 20 hours with us and made large gains to their score.

Of course, the more time spent studying, the better the results will be. We have students who study upwards of 100 hours and they tend to do much better than those who study 20.

For practice tests, we try to recommend completing at least 2 practice tests before the real test, 3 if at all possible. This allows you really get used to the format of the exam. Most importantly, you should take the practice test under realistic conditions and not give yourself any extra time or breaks.

Ultimately, our program works to build on all the testable skills on the exam and every lesson a student does in the PrepScholar program will be dedicated to one of these testable skills. Once a student makes their way through the skill lessons in PrepScholar, they’ll be in good shape to rock the test!

Although the essay is now optional for both the SAT and the ACT, we still think it’s important to support students who are practicing writing essays as part of their test preparation.

We have two effective ways of giving essay instruction. First, we provide detailed strategy lessons about how to excel on the essay, teaching you how to prepare for the range of topics, how to structure your essay, and how to prepare examples for any essay topic.

Secondly, after every practice test, we prompt you to send in your essay. Our head instructor grades the essay and gives you detailed feedback on how to improve your score. This is unique to us as a program (many other programs don’t offer essay grading at all, or use a computerized algorithm that isn’t accurate), and many students benefit from the expert grading.

We find that the best way to study for the PSAT is to use our SAT program. Our SAT program targets the PSAT because the content is identical to the SAT. The PSAT is just shorter and has some minor format changes. Many people prep for the PSAT and the SAT at the same time using PrepScholar SAT.
